WRITING THROUGH
Creative writing as a pathway to voice, confidence, and connection.
Writing Through is an international educational nonprofit that uses creative writing to develop thinking skills, creativity, language fluency, self-esteem, and voice among marginalized and at-risk populations.
Working through local partner organizations, it creates structured spaces where participants can think independently, express themselves, listen to others, and share their work.
What It Does
Writing Through offers in-person and online workshops focused on poetry, stories, journal writing, themes, prompts, brainstorming, discussion, and presentations. Its programs currently span Cambodia, Mexico, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam.
The organization trains facilitators to deliver its model and offers teacher-training workshops. Teachers experience the same creative process as students and learn techniques to build more participatory, confident, and respectful classrooms.
Why It Matters
Many education systems emphasize memorization and repetition while offering limited opportunities for conceptual thinking, creativity, or self-expression. These limitations are especially consequential for people whose voices are often unheard.
Writing Through uses language and the arts to strengthen critical thinking, communication, confidence, and personal agency—one poem, one story, and one voice at a time.
HRX8 Connection
Writing Through was founded and is led by Sue Guiney, its executive director. Its connection to HRX8 also includes Harvard '78 classmate Don Guiney, who has helped champion and support the organization.
